"The Shadowy World of Forecasting"
The sales forecast is the keystone of a manufacturing company. This estimate of future demand provides data for every area of the company. Finance uses it to secure bank loans and project future income. Human resources uses it to plan manpower. Sales uses it to develop promotions and as the basis for bonuses. But Supply chain is the biggest user. We use the sales forecast to develop a production plan which cascades thru MRP to create delivery schedules for components. MRP’s capacity analysis may even result in big money spent on additional production machinery. With so much financially intense activity based on sales forecasts, why do so many companies play fast and loose with them. Some companies use the sales forecast for everything except managing production. Some companies deliberately schedule too little while others deliberately schedule too many. Learn the shadowy motives behind all three.
